GreenLane'a May luncheon presents a new carsharing program for our community brought to you by Point 2 Point Solutions and WeCar plus our Member Spotlight Presentation is presented by Catalyst Technology Group-Allen Perkins.
Carsharing is a service that provides members with easy access to cars for short-term use. Often known as the “missing link” in transportation options, carsharing provides members that normally use transit, bike, or walk for most of their daily trips access to cars when needed.
The benefits of carsharing are far-reaching and often interrelated. Members benefit from lower transportation costs and increased mobility options, while reducing congestion and the demand for parking, which in turn leads to business and community costs savings, urban design benefits, and more compact development. And because carshare vehicles are usually newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles, there is considerable reduction of gasoline consumption and harmful emissions.
Businesses can use carsharing as a strategy to reduce the need for staff to bring a car to work. Carsharing can function as a parking management tool, or as part of a larger sustainable transportation program. Companies can also reduce their expenses by using carshare instead of owning and operating a fleet or reimbursing employees for mileage expenses when they use their personal car.
Join Beth Wheeler and Tracy Ellis to learn how carsharing can provide a sustainable option for your business.BIOS

While the pilot is underway, EWEB is beginning a broader community education effort to explain why utilities are moving towards this digital meter technology and potential customer benefits. The hope is to have a process that's deliberate, thoughtful and transparent, and is an opportunity to hear what neighbors are thinking about the possible transition to smart meters. March 7th GreenLane Luncheon: Lorraine Kerwood of NextStep: "How Your Business Can Help to Educate and Empower Our Youth by Keeping Resources Local"
When:Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 12:00pm - 1:30pmWhere:Cost:$12 per person for lunch
Lorraine Kerwood, Founder and Executive Director of NextStep Recycling
Lorraine Kerwood, Founder and Executive Director of NextStep is joining us for a great educational luncheon presentation! "Keeping Resources Local to Empower and Educate our Youth"
Kerwood will discuss how businesses can positively impact their bottom line while positively impacting our community's most marginalized populations.
About Lorraine and NextStep Recycling: Lorraine, now 50, grew up in a family of 11 children. Her childhood was rough in a number of ways, including the fact that school was always a struggle. Very early on, Lorraine was labeled a special education child, and the combination of all these things resulted in her never believing she had any intelligence, that she could ever "be" anything—or even that she could compete on an equal footing with other people. After 25 years of working class jobs, Lorraine was injured in a car accident and was forced to retrain. Her family urged her to try college. Loraine resisted when she learned students had to use computers. The computer was a symbol of "what smart people" use—and this was a barrier to her understanding that she could be successful in school. During this time, Lorraine was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, which she reports was “one of the greatest moments in my life.” Suddenly, life made more sense. Before the diagnosis, “I spent years thinking I was stupid, inferior, and a danger to others. When I was diagnosed autistic, I discovered my intelligence and capabilities. For that, I am forever grateful”. After additional prodding by her family, she enrolled in an adult education computer class to see if she could learn how to use a computer.
Lorraine was fortunate to have had a patient and supportive teacher and discovered that, like others who fall on the Autistic Spectrum, the computer was very friendly and a great communication tool. To her shock and amazement, Lorraine ended up graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Oregon, with a Bachelor's of Education degree in Family and Community Services. Degree in hand, she went to work as a Social Service Specialist in the Oregon Department of Child Welfare in 2000, out of a desire to help children who were in situations similar to those in her own life. Because of her own struggles, Lorraine has always been determined to do whatever she could to make life easier for other children than it was for her growing up. Technology ended up being the tool she needed.
MacRenewal, now called NextStep, was born. After her first computer died, Lorraine discovered she had a knack at fixing computers, and so she set about finding old ones, refurbishing them, and then gifting them to children and families who couldn’t afford to buy them—many of these recipients were the people with whom she was working at Child Welfare. She quickly discovered that demand, and need, was very high. She moved her "hobby" from her own single car garage into her mother-in-law's double car garage—but quickly outgrew that space as well. She found some other folks in her community who were refurbishing computers and had the desire to address the digital divide, but not the means to find community members who needed access to technology. She brought the hobbyists, the geeks, and those who needed computers together.
In 2004 she took a giant leap: she quit her job and moved her little enterprise out of the garage into a real warehouse. Lorraine continued to work on building services and programs to address the needs of the community and today NextStep is a thriving community service organization with 42 employees, 14 volunteer reuse ambassadors, an ongoing group of Lane County Master Recyclers, and hundreds of volunteers. NextStep now occupies over 43,000 square feet in three separate locations—much of which is training space for community members. To date, NextStep has trained over 8,500 individuals, many who are on the autism spectrum. Lane County, OR has one of the highest autism rates in the nation – one in every 97 children are diagnosed as having autism. NextStep has refurbished over 24,000 computers, placing technology locally, nationally, and internationally and recycled over 10,500,000 pounds of electronics waste.
Lorraine is a member of the DEQ Oregon E-Cycles workgroup and a City of Eugene Human Rights Commissioner. She is the Eugene Area Chapter Coordinator for the Reuse Alliance. She is a past co-founder and Board Member of the GreenLane Sustainable Business Network, a member of the Lane Community College Computer Information Technology Advisory Committee, and is a proud Lane County Master Recycler. Lorraine is a passionate advocate for people on the autism spectrum, for trauma survivors, and for people who experience disabilities. Lorraine believes that all people are brilliant, no matter what label they carry, and should be treated with respect and dignity.

Shawn will also share how a company can effectively create their own grassroots organization and sustainable festival which further fosters healthy communities and attracts “raving fans” who admire such bold commitments radiating from a company doing business in today’s profit driven world.
If you aspire to add green value to your company’s mission, this lecture is a must.Shawn Donnille, Vice-President/Co-Owner of Mountain Rose Herbs,

At NEDCO, she has enjoyed many roles and helped to develop and launch several programs, including Springfield Farmers’ Market. GreenLane Luncheon, April 6th 2011 with Educational Speaker:Joe Moll, E.D., McKenzie River Trust-Private Lands & Public Goods
When:Wednesday, April 6, 2011 - 12:00pm - 1:30pmWhere:Cost:Delicious buffet lunch catered by Wild Duck: $10.
Joe Moll, Executive Director of McKenzie River Trust will be speaking about how private land conservation contributes to regional prosperity. Joe has been Executive Director of the Trust since 2005. Over the past 25 years he has worked in banking, land management, guiding and Japanese translation, fundraising, conservation planning, and grizzly bear wrestling.
Goods brought to market from private farms and forestlands have been a driving economic force in our region for well over a century. There is a growing recognition, however, that private lands can also provide a wealth of goods and services like clean water, fish and wildlife habitat and open spaces that benefit the public at large, beyond the traditional marketplace. Today’s speaker will describe the work of land trusts, not-for-profit organizations that do real estate deals to secure some of those public benefits for the long haul while compensating private landowners today. These transactions and the values that they protect help make communities desirable and prosperous.

EDUCATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
About Bruce Anderson
Bruce Anderson served as the chairperson of the 10-Eugene Rotary Club member special committee that earlier this year completed six months of work by producing the 25 page report entitled “Business Sustainability, In Practice”. As a shareholder in the Eugene law firm, Hutchinson, Anderson, Cox, Coons and DuPriest, Bruce practiced business and environmental law in Eugene for more then thirty years before his retirement. A graduate of Duke University for both his undergraduate and law school degrees (a place that Bruce says includes within its degree requirements the swearing of allegiance to college basketball), Bruce fell in love with the American west after spending four years as a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam War. After interviewing in 6 cities in 3 western states, Bruce, and his wife of 47 years, Edie, chose Eugene and started there almost forty year love affair with Eugene and Oregon in 1971. Bruce and Edie, a retired District 4-J chemistry teacher, have two married daughters and three grandchildren. At the lunch
Bruce will explain what led up to the decision to produce the “Business Sustainability, In Practice” report as a project of the Eugene Rotary Club. He will outline the report’s contents and explain why it was decided to produce it in the form of a “how to manual” for businesses interested in initially adopting, or improving an already adopted, Sustainability Policy. At the conclusion of his presentation, Bruce will answer questions and explain how any interested person can obtain a free copy of the report.MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Find out how businesses are getting noticed
The Mayor's Bold Steps program recognizes the sustainability efforts businesses are making today. This award honors businesses that make decisions based on the concept of the triple bottom line, which includes taking extra care in how they treat people and the planet, while supporting economic prosperity. If you win, you receive $5,000 worth of free advertising, recognition from the Mayor at a public event, and future opportunities to promote your award to all concerned clientelle.
Who's coming?
Mayor Kitty Piercy; Carolyn Stein, BRING; Ian Hill, SeQuential Biofuels; Julie Tilt, Hummingbird Wholesale; Charlie Ruff, Oregon Country Fair
Mayor Kitty Piercy will open the program with information about the impetus behind the Bold Steps program. When she first ran for Mayor in 2003, Ms. Piercy unveiled an economic development strategy that focused on building a sustainable economy. She rightly predicted that sustainability would grow in importance as an economic engine and she wanted to position our community in the forefront of this new economy. The Bold Steps program is one of many initiatives that were generated by the Mayor's emphasis on building a sustainable economy.
Carolyn Stein
Carolyn Stein of Bring Recycling and director of Bring's Re:Think program will moderate the panel of speakers.Ian Hill
Co-founder Ian Hill of SeQuential biofuels will share his story of how and why they are a Bold Steps award winner. According to the Bold Steps judges, SeQuential is very strong in all areas of the triple bottom line. They pay their workers above average industry wages, sourced all their building material for their Eugene station within a 50 mile radius and use 100% EWEB wind power to cover what their solar array doesn't provide. SeQuential actively reaches out to create partnerships in the community whether with local schools or local business. Their boldest step is moving their biodiesel pricing away from being directly tied to petroleum markets. They are doing this by sourcing all biofuels sold at the Eugene station from within Oregon. Over 80% of that biofuel is from used cooking oil and the remainder is from non-GMO canola grown in rotation cycles with food crops.Julie Tilt
Hummingbird Wholesale has been working with local farmers in the Willamette Valley to grow organic beans, grains and seeds for over 10 years. The company currently has 8 farmers growing in the valley, four of which are grass seed farmers who have converted conventional land to organic. Sustainability is integrated at every level of the organization, from mission statement to company policy, to packaging and transportation systems. Hummingbird also has a strong social equity commitment to hiring and retaining a diverse staff. What you can expect
The program is a collaborative effort between a number of community volunteers, Cumulus media group and Mayor Kitty Piercy. Learn from a panel of businesses that have received this award about their bold step - how they pursued it and lessons learned. Then, discuss with fellow GreenLaners at your table what bold steps your organization might take.
More about Bold Steps
The Bold Steps program grew out of Mayor Piercy's Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI). Rusty Rexius and David Funk, co-chairs of the SBI, were speaking at an event attended by the manager of Cumulus Radio. The manager, Michael O'Shea, stepped up and said that he wanted his six stations in the market to do something to help propel the issue forward. From that offer the Mayor developed the idea of an award and PSA program. The program consisted of PSAs promoting sustainable measures businesses and residents could instigate immediately. Understanding that no business was totally sustainable, the Mayor suggested that an award be given regularly to businesses that were taking steps toward sustainability. Jennifer Bell developed the "Bold Steps" name for the award and co-wrote the initial PSAs with David Funk.
