Announcements!

In conjunction with Bike to Work Day, GreenLane has endorsed cycling as an economically beneficial, healthful and community friendly means of everyday transportation. Adding to its reputation for being environmentally friendly, this endorsment expands the value of cycling, making it a community benefit. PORTLAND — Nearly 300 people turned out June 1 for Oregon Business magazine’s second annual celebration of the 100 Best GREEN Companies to Work For in Oregon.

Starting in June, GreenLane luncheons are changing to once a month.  We wanted to focus on education for our members, and delivering quality content, and we realized that two luncheons a month was stretching our Events/Networking Committee a little thin.  Luncheon meetings will be held the first Wednesday of each month.

Daniel Swantek and Allen PerkinsIn September of 2007, I had a dream of creating a local organization.   It would be a single resource for the networking and educational needs of businesses and organizations in our community which had the desire to become more sustainable. This was a lofty idea, and I knew I needed help.  I contacted Isbel Ingham who was working with NextStep Recycling.

I got a call from a State agency a few weeks ago asking for financial data for the local bike industry. Seems they were compiling the economic impact of various industries located in Oregon, and bike retailers, manufacturers and other associated businesses were in the mix. I have to admit, when I thought about how many people it took to make bikes, sell bikes, repair bikes or supply parts for bikes, there wasn't a huge impact compared to other industries.

Windermere Real Estate marked the month of April by focusing on sustainability.   An E-waste drive, plus educational opportunities for their 95+ realtors was organized with help from GreenLane member Kristena Cox, and the support of NextStep Recycling.

Oregon Community Credit Union, a recent member of GreenLane, has earned Bring's RE:think award. In earning the award, OCCU learned about...

* waste prevention and recycling
* energy efficiency and conservation
* water conservation
* water quality
* purchasing

Congrats OCCU!!

Hummingbird Wholesale has been receiving lots of attention this year -- earning the Bold Steps Award, being chosen as delegates to the International Slow Food Conference in Turin, Italy in October 2010, and now the *OOC (Oregon Organic Coalition) Award of Excellence.

The OOC Award of Excellence was given to individuals and organizations that demonstrated innovation in organic practices, service to the industry, expansion of organic business opportunities, and overall achievement in the state’s organic industry.

“Hummingbird's greatest potential impact is seen in its efforts to remake the local food system by sharing the risk of converting land used to grow grass seed, to grow food, thereby reducing the miles and greenhouse gases produced in transporting food."

Hummingbird has contracted with eight Willamette Valley farms to grow beans, grain and seed products, which are delivered by bicycle to customers in town. Hummingbird also has a zero waste policy.

Congratulations Hummingbird Wholesale!  Check out http://hummingbirdwholesale.com for availability of these local grains, beans and seeds!
